1. Chief Internal Events Reported.

(a) The main islands of the Paracels are to be named Yung Shing and Tai Ping. A preliminary survey for their deve- lopment is now in hand. (Wah Kiu Yat Po, 15/4).

(b) The Hong Kong Chinese Commercial Community, being universally opposed to Income Tax in any form, have presented a petition to Government not to introduce such a tax. Kiu Yat Po, 15/4).

The shooting incident in which a Hong Kong Police Officer was involved last December is being revived by the People's Political Council in Canton, increased compensation being demanded. (National Times, 16/4).

(a) A Kowloon-Canton train was ambushed on April 16 by bandits and passengers robbed. (Kung Sheung Daily Press, 18/4).

(e) An epidemic of meningitis in Waiyang district, Kwang- tung, has beoz reports by Chung Cheng, Jih Pao Many patients are being treated in Canton Hospitals. The epidemic appears to be spreading. (Shang Pao, Canton, 12/4).

(f) Tsingtao harbour is closed to foreign shipping as from April 11. (Ta Kwong Pao, Canton, 12/4).

(g) It is estimated that the flight of capital to Hong Hong has now reached C.N.$18,000,000,000 from Shanghai and C.N.$15,- 000,000,000 from Canton, mainly in gold bars. 12/4).

(h) The Kuomintang, National Democratic Socialists, and the Young China Parties have agreed to the 3 Parties Joint Guiding Political Principles. (Wah Kiu Yat Po, 16/4).
